Greetings from Paul Davies
Cleethorpes Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Well we are into April, the weather certainly feels warmer and we are having some rain on the Monday as I prepare the content for this week’s newsletter which should help get the grass on the course growing more consistently. Rob and his gang have been scarifying and brush rolling the fairways, and where needed over seeding to bring the fairways up to scratch for the long season ahead. It has been noticeable to hear such positive comments about how much work you see them doing.

Saturday saw an extra comp put on in the gap between winter and summer in the form of a Pro Stableford. First Division was won by recently returned to the fold Siddy Dick with a fine 38 points. Lee Davy was second with 33 points. Division Two saw a rejuvenated Dave O’Hare win with a fantastic 40 points from Dave Copley on 36 points. There were three two’s from Rick Coppock, Dave Cullum and Matt Smith. Vouchers for the winners and Two’s for this event have been applied to the winning accounts.

Sunday evening saw a great turnout for the Junior Evening. The earlier Edwards Competition was won by Cameron Tuck so a big well done to him. The nine hole competition was won by fast improving Dillon Welford. Also a big well done to George Wales who has now got his official club handicap.

Daily Mail Foursomes National Competition

The ladies from Cleethorpes Golf Club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate two of their members, Lady Captain Judith Gorman and Gill Kapka for winning 3 - 2, away against Grimsby, in the first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes Competition. We wish them every success and good luck in the next round, to be played at Louth, at a date to be announced later.

Wednesday 1 April 2014 - Captain vs Vice Captain

The battle between the Captain's team and the Vice Captain's in this matchplay competition was fierce and the damp, foggy weather conditions made the course play long but it was the Captain's team who proved to be the stronger and prevailed on the day.

Tuesday 1 April 2014 - Spring Cup

Winner- Garth Atkins
Runner Up - Harry Balmforth (On a Countback with - Keith Atkinson & Peter Oliver)

The Spring Cup was accompanied by typical Spring weather and attracted 49 competitors

Football wise a great away win for my boys, The Albion, who now look increasingly like Premiership survival is on the cards. Norwich then went and sacked Hughton, does seem kneejerk to me. Liverpool remain on top after a battling win at West Ham, though Chelsea (Nick Bradders take note you are mentioned!) and Man City are still breathing down their necks. Everton still have a chance of fourth spot after crushing a lacklustre Arsenal. Does this spell the end of Wenger’s reign...?

Shop wise as like last week it is as full as an egg with the Men’s PING clothing still due to come in. The loft and lie machine has been a big plus, and I now have some idea how to use it having had some training from the Tall Lad! We are still awaiting a delivery date for the FlightScope and Alex in particular is getting itchy feet as he is desperate to get it here and get using it.

Stock wise there has been great interest in the SLDR range. Please feel free to pop in for a trial, we have this ace tape called Ghost Tape we can put on any club to allow you to try without marking the individual club. The putter and wedge ranges are proving a real hit across the board. Also selling well right now is The Ladies PING clothing range. Feel free to pop in for a browse any time.

The shop is now full of exciting new products and we are pleased with how the shop is looking. The Ladies deal on the new PING clothing has been well received, simply 10% OFF any one item, 15% OFF any two items or 20% OFF any three items bought in any one transaction. Feel free to pop in to try on.

S3 trolley now in stock with choice of Lead Acid or Lithium Battery.

Vokey wedge £90 per club , special two wedge purchase price of £170 (must be in one transaction)

Lesson wise I am very busy too right now so if you are looking for any coaching click here and I will contact you to book a time.

Mother's Day saw a successful clubhouse with 120 meals catered for to much acclaim.

Last week saw Shoreline charity host at the club with again 120 meals and a casino night catered for, again to much acclaim.

Also I was most happy to attend a surprise birthday bash thrown by Lesley, Rebecca and Josh for Nigel Leach in honour of his 50th. He came in blindfolded and thought he had been whisked away to a hotel, so the shock on his face when he saw us lot was great. Great night, too much to drink and too much dancing (loose term where me and a dance floor are concerned, strictly won’t ever want me!). It was great to see Mr Goodway enjoying himself and lasting the pace so quickly after his latest hip operation.

Events to get in the diary

Open Day is now gearing up for the 27th April, which is a Sunday. This sees the round of golf with fish and chips for a tenner with bookings taken in the shop, and early booking for any friends is recommended as we already have 7 fourballs booked in. Times are available from around 11 now up to 3. Also on the day is the FREE coaching for new players looking to get into our great game. Click here to get details of the coaching times available. Remember any bookings where you introduce and come with the newcomer gets you a £5 voucher, spendable on the Open Day only.

Also now open for entries is the first Invitation Day on 7th June. Entry is 315 including two’s and entry will only be taken with payment.

Lastly on the events notes is a reminder that if you are intending to play in the Pro-Am get in early as there are very few spaces left and only morning slots to boot! Again click here to let me know and I will sort it out.

Strengthen your woods line-up by filling the gaps

When I see a golfer with a full custom-fitted set of woods in their bag, I know they have considered how far they hit each club. Often we can neglect this part of the game at the top end of our bag which costs us valuable shots. Some simple fine-tuning in this area can work wonders.

We don't like to moan about the sun but it can cause problems on the course, which is why owning a pair of sunglasses designed with golf in mind is such an essential piece of kit.
