Greetings from Paul Davies
Cleethorpes Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Well a busy week again for the club to say the least, but with generally good weather and a course looking in excellent order, there is a real buzz about the place right now!!

The highlight of the week for the club was an excellently organised (by Andrew and Gill, with able support from many willing volunteers) Open Day on Sunday. 42 new golfers got a taste of what golf has to offer via some tuition from the boys in the shop. This was then brilliantly enhanced with the opportunity to go on the course to get a real feel for the game. Thanks to the Sunday players who happily allowed 4 holes to be out of play to them to allow this to happen. Several members took the new players for three holes with a through the gate 10th hole, a hit the green 11th hole and a play to score par three hole on the 13th. The feedback and lesson bookings from the day have been excellent as well. With a follow up evening Open Day on the 14th May you can still get family and friends to have a go, and also there is a playing Open Day for more experienced or lapsed golfers. Ring Gill or Andrew on 816110 option three for details.

Saturday saw the first of the year’s ‘majors’, i.e a Cup Competition. Well done to Paul Gorman who triumphed with 41 points. Look out for the full results in due course.

Saturday 18 April 2015 - Bill Brown Rose Bowl

Saturday saw the Bill Brown Rose Bowl take place with 57 pairs enter. 1. Ash Cox & Jon Ashley winning with an impressive 62 which included an incredible three 2's from Ash! 2. Simon Hewitt & Phil Robinson with 66 and 3. with 67 was Rick Cooper & Dave O'Hare.

Friday 10 April - Pro's Friday Roll-up

We had the first Pro's Roll Up on Friday and whilst we only had 3 fourballs it was a great fun 9 holes followed by sandwiches and chips after. Anne and Vernon Poultney combined with Jim and Pam Arnell to score 12.9 in a through the gate Texas Scramble. Micko played with Paul Barker, Chris Wells and Craig Gostellow to score 14.6, whilst I teamed up with John and Barbara Bayliss, and Andy Richie to score 18.

Monday 13 April 2015 - Ireene Webster Memorial Cup

Due to illness, unfortunately, only seven senior ladies’ section members competed for the above cup, gifted by Pat Williams to commemorate the founder member of the Senior Ladies Section, Irene Webster. The winner was Jean Craven with Maureen Meadows being runner up.

Afterwards, twenty-six ladies had a lovely meal in the club lounge followed by a free raffle for chocolate bunnies and boxes of chocolates gifted by Pat Williams. There was also a Bring and Win raffle. The Cleethorpes Ladies’ Section Captain, Ann Lambert, assisted Pat Williams in the presentation of the cup and runner up trophy, accompanied by bottles of wine also gifted by Pat.

Cleethorpes Golf Club Senior Ladies Section Birthday Cup winners: Jean Craven, Pat Williams, Maureen Meadows, and Cleethorpes Ladies’ Section Captain, Ann Lambert.

Coming soon is the Artie White Golf day on Friday, 8 May and I know they still need teams. A four man team is £100 and the charity supports local causes so if you want to play I have forms in the shop.

The lists for both Captain’s Day (main men’s board) and Captain’s Am-Am (spike bar notice board) are filling up so don’t forget to get your name down. Also we have the first Invitation Day for 6th June sheet in the shop so pop in to enter. Payment of £15 must be made with the entry. Lastly, the Pro-Am is bubbling nicely but we still have spaces for teams. The date is Friday 19th June so if you wish to play pop in and we can sort.

Sport wise England cricket had a timely boost with a great victory in the second test in The West Indies. Grimsby had a moral boosting win before the play offs, and my boys should be safe after a bore draw at home to Liverpool. Hull had a great win and with Leicester winning a 5th game in a row my prediction for the drop now is Burnley, QPR and Sunderland. Mind you Newcastle are looking over their shoulder!! At the top Man United looked poor at Everton and missed a chance to put real daylight between them and Liverpool. Arsenal and Chelsea drew, and Man City had a last gasp win against Villa, so it looks Chelsea for the title with Arsenal and City fighting for runner up spot.

Golf wise Justin Rose birdied the last two holes to win a 7th US title and David Howell narrowly missed out to China's Ashen Wu in the Chinese Open.

Lesson wise we are busy right now I am pleased to say after a difficult winter. With the summer lesson deal of 7 lessons for £100 on feel free to make us even busier and let us help your game reach its potential. FlightScope fittings with Alex are also available for any equipment changes you might need to make. He also gives an excellent gapping session to help you understand how far you hit each club. Click here to book any sessions needed.

Srixon balls

What ball will suit me?

Last week we reminded you how important it is to play with the right ball because we all have different swing speeds. On top of this our own budgets vary and it can be difficult to know if you’re getting the best out of your ball. Ask us about Srixon’s range which covers golfers of all abilities and watch this video to find out more.
