Football news and the less we can talk about football the better with my United team being humiliated by MK Dons, let's just hope with the new signings made on Deadline Day can help us move forward and get back playing well!!
Saturday saw Charity day take place with an amazing 48 teams take part so well done to Judith Gorman, Dave Holland and all their team for putting on a great day. Results are as follows:
- 1st Overall team: Ashley Cox, Paul Wain, Tony Cox and John Jarrell
- 2nd overall team: Zach Mawer, G Simpson, J Simpson and Boyd Mawer
- Mixed team winners: Darren Gough, Ash Fletcher, Nanette Tuck, Cam Tuck.
- Ladies Team winners: Judith Gorman, Alison Fletcher, Jo Gibbons and Gill Kapka.
Cleethorpes Golf Club Captain's Charity Day – Saturday 30 August 2014
Saturday started bright, dry and early for the Captains, Dave Holland and Judith Gorman, of Cleethorpes GC, perfect conditions for the start of what culminated, after all the hard work and planning, to be an extremely pleasing result both financially for the Charity concerned ‘The Rock Foundation’ and the competitors.
The Clubhouse opened early to provide much needed refreshments for the ‘early risers’ with the first of the 48 teams teeing off for this 4 ball AM-AM competition at 7.54am and the last one’s going out at 2.30pm – what tremendous support with prizes for Ladies, Men and Mixed teams.!!! The finale was the presentation in the Clubhouse by the Captains, after a scrumptious meal, raffle and auction, all in aid of the charity and for those still standing, there was a ‘disco’ of course!
The whole event was mainly sponsored by Read Hyundai and Cardsave whom we must give a huge thank you to show our great appreciation. Also many thanks to the following as well; A.B.P, Big Sky Golf, BMH State Agents, Bring Logistics, Drive Safe, Jacobs LES Ltd., JCT 600 Audi, L.C.S. The raffle proved a huge success also with donations from: Burtons Menswear, Chris Lynn Photography, Cleethorpes GC Caters, Cleethorpes GC Pro Shop, DFDS Seaways, Karting World, Kenwick Park Hotel, Kingsway Hotel, P66, Seacroft Golf Club, Sheer Radiance, TomTom, Wardles Butchers, Willow Lake Cottages, and Members of Cleethorpes GC.
The Captains thanked all the helpers: halfway house, starters, and juniors for the chipping competition, catering and bar staff, green staff and the great team who assisted with the organizing of the event: Nanette Tuck, Daren Gough, Rob Duncan and Judith Gorman.
The winners overall were: 1st. Ashley Cox, John Jarrell, Tony Cox and Paul Wain (team name -Norfolk and Good) with a tremendous 86 stableford points (below, left). 2nd. Boyd Mawer, Zack Mawer, and Mr. and Mrs. G Simpson, with 85 points (below, right).
Men’s team prize went to James Hibbitt, Matt Helstern, Will Burkett and Dan Houlton with 84 points. The ladies team prize went to Alison Fletcher, Jo Gibbons, Judith Gorman and Kill Kapka with 79 points (below, left). The mixed team winners were: Nanette Tuck, Cam Tuck, Ash Fletcher and Darren Gough also with 79 points (below, right).
There were men’s and ladies prizes for nearest the pin on 3rd, 8th, 11th and 17, nearest the line on the 15th plus a chipping competition. Of the 192 competitors only14 people got 2’s and received 14 balls each.
Along with the raffle there was an auction, a competition to win a PING putter and a chipping competition.
A tremendous £6,015 was raised in total for The Rock Foundation a charity to help young people and adults with learning difficulties to achieve their full potential in life. This charity was started by a local lady, Pam Hodge, to help provide much needed support/life skills for her son. The Rock Foundation has now has grown into the wonderful organization it is today and it is looking forward to moving into it’s new premises at the old YMCA building, 39 Heneage Road Grimsby and we hope this contribution will make a big difference!

Saturday 23 August 2014 - Saturday Medal
We had the August Monthly Medal on Saturday the 23rd August when the weather was very mixed, which included an hours down pour and saw play suspended due to the course flooding. Play resumed and there was some good scoring throughout the 3 divisions. Ash Fletcher with a gross 69 nett 68 won division 1, Elliot Grantham with a gross 78 nett 65 won division 2 and John Hudson with a gross 91 nett 67 won division 3.

Saturday 23 August 2014 - Golf Widows
This very popular competition was once again well supported and enjoyed even by the non-golfers. The competition comprises of a team of two, the non-golfer putting and the golfer playing tee to green. Some great fun was had by all and some superb putting resulted in an amazing score for the winners: 1. Sarah and Mark Atkins, gross 45-9=36, 2. Julie Bird and Martin Warren, gross 38-1= 37 and they took it on the back 6 from 3. Jack Garland and Rae Grieve, gross 44-7=37. The best putter was Julie Bird with 15. A well deserved supper was served in the Clubhouse afterwards.
Sunday 24 August, 2014 - Peckett Cup
A great afternoon for this cup competition with some very pleasing results: 1. Elaine and Paul Barker, nett 69 and 2. Chris and Dave Reid with a nett 72.

Monday 25 August, 2014 Millennium Cup
The Millennium Cup was presented to the Club by that captains that year, Sue Bell and Clarry Williams to mark the occasion.
Bank holiday Monday certainly was very typical from a weather point of view, with drizzle for the majority of the afternoon and this certainly proved challenging from some of the later starters but the 'dynamic duo' managed to take the silverware for the second consecutive day and the Cup was presented to the winners by Clarry Williams. 1. Elaine and Paul Barker with 40 stableford points and they took it on a count back from 2. Barbara and John Bayliss also with 40 points, 3. Jan and Tony Dann 36 points.

Championship Day
This cup was again won by Gill Kapka for the 12 consecutive time and by doing this she has equalled the previous record set by Mrs. C Jones also won it consecutively for 12 years from 1949 - 1961. Well done Gill!!

Friday 22 August 2014 - Grannies Cup
To uphold the tradition at Cleethorpes Golf Club, Sue Ball travelled all the way from Spain, as she does each year, to present this trophy which was presented to the Ladies Section by her late mother, Floss Brown, in 1979 and was first won by Mrs. M. Hammond. This year the Grannies Cup was won by past Captain, Pam Arnell with a nett 73 which also managed to reduce her handicap. 2. Gill Kapka, nett 74 and 3. Lady Captain, Judith Gorman with nett 78. Each year Sue also presents the 'newest granny' with a cup to commemorate the occasion and this year's winner was Kate Appleyard.

Wednesday 27 August 2014 - Lady President's Day
Lady President, Barbara Bayliss, chose her 'special' day well with wall to wall sunshine pleasant sunshine. The conditions weren't easy after the amount of rain that we have experienced over the last weeks but Kate Appleyard excelled to take first place with a gross 83-12= nett 71, on exact handicap. 2. Vice Captain, Anne Lambert, 85-13.8= 71.2 and 3d. Alison Fletcher, 81-9=72. The day culminated with a meal and presentation by the Lady President in the Clubhouse afterwards when numerous prizes were awarded and the Lady Captain, Judith Gorman presented a bouquet of flowers to the President.
