Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we congratulate Francesco on a fantastic win, there is some good news but also some bad news, there is a double winner in the Junior Open, and TaylorMade offer you some FREE golf balls.

Fantastic Francesco

I just about have settled back down after the disappointment of losing the World Cup semi-final, and a feast of golf at Carnoustie has certainly helped! Well done to Francesco Molinari for his wonderful play on Sunday with a bogey free 69 to win the title by two in deserved fashion. Runners up were Rory Mcilroy, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose (my pick at the start) and Kevin Kisner, with the expected challenges of Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods wavering on a dramatic day. Also well done to Eddie Pepperell for a fine last day 67 to climb up the leaderboard!

On the bad news front, most of you will know I got turned over for some cash by our traveller friends on Saturday! One of those moments of luck for the offenders as I went to investigate the locker rooms as I had heard an undue noise, by the time I returned to the shop some 30 seconds later they had nipped in and done the deed. Worst of all I tried to get through to the Police 5 times and there seemed to be nobody home! What a surprise. I’m over it now but water is £5 a bottle for the next two weeks!

On a more positive note, Darryl has just returned from a well-earned week off and had 5 days in Ibiza relaxing. He is now available again for fitting and coaching duties. Mind you we have a full week in the diary to go at! Take a look at the new PING i210 and i500 (forged, it’s a beauty! ) irons when you are in too. Stock is still good in the shop to take advantage of the shirt amnesty and putter fitting offers so pop in for a browse.

Competition news

Lady Captain’s Days

Sixty one ladies enjoy a superb day both weather wise and out on the course. There were photos with ‘props’, videos on the tee, a delicious halfway house and a magnificent meal enjoyed by 75 Ladies in the evening. Lady Captain, Babs Swann, is known for her bubbly personality and she didn’t disappoint, everyone commented what a super Captain’s Day she organised.

The weather did help the golfers and some super scores were returned. The Captains Cup was won by Judith Gorman with a nett 66, second was Christina Reid with 67 and third was Pauline Smith with 68. The best gross was Gill Kapka with 72.

Junior Open

The winner of the Junior Open was George Mason from Warheads Golf Club. George secured the best nett and gross prize with a round of 70 nett 68. Captains Babs and Dave were on hand for the trophy prize giving, and a big well done to Bill and Judy Garton for their efforts in the event getting 27 entries.

The Centenary Cup

Well done to Paul Croft on his first honours board win, and to Paulite Vince for a fine second place, much deserved for all his practice time! Rik Mazz continues an amazing run of form and we see Jazza shoot a fine 68 to pip evergreen Martin Warren to best gross by a shot!

Danger!

Are you the type of golfer who considers the danger ahead of you and plans accordingly, or do you pull a driver from the bag on every par-4 and par-5 without a blink? If you’re the latter then you need to read on.

Consider the danger
You hear pros talk a lot about the ‘smart shot’ in their post-round interviews. If you’re on the tee and there’s a bunker, ditch or other hazard around the distance that your driver or fairway wood normally flies, then make sure you change club to one that takes the trouble out of play, as displayed in this graphic. While you’ll have a slightly longer shot to the green, you’ll greatly reduce the chance of a big number.

Know your numbers
Of course, key to all of this is knowing how far each of your woods carries.
