Greetings from Paul Davies
Cleethorpes Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Well a third lightning delay on the big days was seen for Saturday’s Invitation day, albeit just half an hour. The course drainage as ever held up superbly so as soon as the lightning passed over we were able to get everyone back out there.

It was great to see Dave Reid organise 12 members with 12 Louth lads for the umpteenth year, and despite the headache of organising such a rabble go on to win with partner Craig Evans!! Second was Dave Ingham with Pete Britcliff, followed by Andy Taylor and Guy Shufflebotham. Fourth was Dave Hannay with Sean Mathews, fifth Phil Welby and Martin Mumby. Best gross saw Steve Brattan win with Basil Brush, aka Mike Windsor and second gross Paul Stenton with Alan Anderson. Special mention of thanks to Pam Welby for a great half way house again, and to Phil ‘the board man’ Welby and Glenn Wishart who took on the bulk of the organisation for the day. Special mention too for the course again being presented so well by Rob and his merry gang.

When John met Sir Nick...

"So there's me and Sir Nick Faldo attending our daughters Graduation Ceremony at UEA Law School, Norwich (please note we have a daughter each, we don't share the same one!)

  • Nick Faldo - career wins 47, Major wins 6, career winnings £9 million, estimated wealth £61 million.
  • John Hudson - career wins 2 (Winter Greensomes comp with Colin Rands and Jaguar Golf Day, Brough 2014), career earnings £87.50 and three golf balls, estimated wealth £87.50 and two golf balls - I lost one!!

Strangely enough I didn't mention golf to him at all!!"

Saturday 2 August, 2014 - Men's 2nd Invitation Day

The second men's Invitation Day at Cleethorpes was again, extremely well supported by 79 pairs from early in the morning and it was perhaps those competitors who saw the best the most settled weather of the day.

The competition had to be halted on one occasion for heavy thunder storms but the majority battled on and great teamwork of Dave Reid and his guest from Louth, Craig Evans secured 1st place.

The results as follows:

  1. Dave Reid/Craig Evans 63
  2. Dave Ingham/Pete Britcliff 64
  3. Andy Taylor/Guy Shufflebotham 65 B9
  4. Dave Hannay/Sean Mathews 65 L3
  5. Phil Welby/ Marin Mumby 66

Gross

  1. Steve Brattan/Mike Windsor 70 B9
  2. Paul Stenton/Alan Anderson 70

Sunday 27 July 2014 Club Championship Day

On a sunny Sunday Cleethorpes was buzzing with the air show spectacle being played out in the skies, while on the golf course Cleethorpes men played their 36 hole championship competition playing for both the Moss and Bloomer Cup. Former champion John Jarrell was experiencing a spectacular first 18 holes, breaking the course record by shooting a formidable gross 64, nett 65 off his +1 handicap and leaving the field with a challenge to catch him in the afternoon round. Keeping his nerve John Jarrell shot a fantastic nett 70 in the afternoon to post a combined score of 134 to win the Bloomer cup with Ashley Rycroft in runners up spot with 144 and Darren Fuller and Andy Garton finishing third with 146. The Moss cup for the best nett went to Ashley Rycroft, one of the Cleethorpes green keepers with a nett 132, with John Jarrell in second place on 136 and Zach Mawer and Murray Watt both on 139, Zach taking third place on exact handicap. Taking out the main prize winners, the best gross morning round went to Danny Houlton with Matt Barber taking the best gross in the afternoon, the best nett in the morning went to Joe Victory with Dave Ingham taking the best nett in the afternoon. Congratulations also went to Steve Brattan for his hole in one on the 8th.

Cladingbowl Rose Bowl Stableford Competition

How lucky we ladies are at Cleethorpes Golf Club to belong a centenary club steeped in a wealth of history and today was one of those special occasions where the passion for golf of one of our former members and Lady Captain (1958) was very much in evidence.

The above competition has been played since 1960 when Mrs Cladingbowl decided to present the trophy to encourage the playing of stableford competitions. Although she moved to Seacroft in 1958, the year of her Captaincy, and played at Northshore, where later she was Ladies’ Captain too, she still remained a member of Cleethorpes for many years and returned every year until her death 16 years ago to present the trophy. The first winner was Floss Brown who sadly died on 3 September 2006 and who also presented her own trophy, the Grannies Cup, to be played later in the year.

Since Mrs Cladingbowl’s death, her daughter, Patricia has travelled from Lincoln to proudly present the trophy on her mother’s behalf and today she was accompanied by her grand daughter Georgina Grayson (Mrs. Cladingbowl's great grand daughter) and have tea with Lady Captain, Judith Gorman. Patricia herself was a keen golfer until recently and started playing at the age of 7 or 8, (one or two years ago) under the watchful eye of Dave Ramsey, Professional at Cleethorpes Golf Club, who I am sure some of you will still remember. He made Patricia her first driver and iron with hickory shafts over sixty years ago, which were presented to the Cleethorpes Ladies Section, to mark the 50th anniversary of her mother being Lady Captain at Cleethorpes. They are proudly displayed in the Ladies Lounge where Patricia feels is the appropriate place for them to rest.

The course was in ‘tip top’ competition for this year’s competition, having to postpone the original arranged date on 28 May due to torrential rain. The superb weather conditions encouraged some excellent scoring and Gill Woodward regained the trophy with the same points as last year, 37. Helen Austin was nudged into second place on a count back also with 37 points and Joan Wilkinson took 3rd place with 36 point and she took it from Chris Reid.

As Patricia explained, it’s like ‘coming home’ when she returns to Cleethorpes and she was delighted to present Gill with the Cladingbowl Rose Bowl for a second time with such a wonderful score. She looks forward to her return next year. After the presentation, Lady Captain, Judith Gorman presented Georgina with flowers.

Monday 4 August 2014 - Janet Todd Trophy

Monday brought the type of weather the Senior Ladies of Cleethorpes dream about, sunshine, blue skies and a gentle cooling breeze. This enticed thirteen of the senior ladies to complete for the Janet Todd Trophy, a stableford competition, which Janet presented to the Senior Ladies Section during her captaincy.

The trophy and prizes were presented by Kath Stones, the Section's first President.

The photograph shows from left to right: The winner, Jean Craven, Kath Stones, the first Senior Ladies President and the runner-up, Anne Poultney.

Tuesday 29 July, 2014 - Monthly Stableford

1st Division

  • Winner - Mike Ellis
  • Runner Up - Patrick O'Mahony

2nd Division

  • Winner - Tony Miller
  • Runner Up - Alec Campbell

Again, the Seniors' competition was well supported by 51 participants who enjoyed beautiful summer weather conditions.

With the G30 woods now in store we have seen great interest, and with demo clubs to try now is a great time to book a FlightScope fitting with us. Alex has been busy doing the bulk of this work as his technical knowledge is so good, a great addition I must say to our ranks. Also Titleist iron sales have been good since the addition of our Titleist fitting cart. E-mail paul.davies@foremostgolf for details of fitting costs and availability.

It was great to see past head greenkeeper Les Howkins back for Invitation day, albeit three and a half stones lighter than the last time I saw him!!! Looking good Les. Also great to see back was Mike Windsor with his Foxy friend Basil Brush. Look out on facebook, twitter etc for photos and details of his visit!!!

Football wise we now await the start of the season where all the transfer dealings will then be on show to see how good each clubs tradings have been. Cricket wise England at last won a test, and Jimmy Anderson was cleared of any wrong doing and so can bowl (he might be pumped up!!) in the next test.

Well plenty of pics of different things this week, please e-mail me any relevant golfing pictures to share, have a great week, Paul
