Greetings from Paul Davies
Cleethorpes Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Well here we are typing away again after another eventful and fast flowing week down at the club. It seems the first half of this year has gone faster than ever!!

Friday saw a brilliant day at the club as Tony Diable hosted his charity day for The Linkage Trust. The pupils at this excellent school for youngsters with learning difficulties were in attendance and fulfilled all their duties with great aplomb. Tony was consummate as host, the course played fantastic, and the bar and food went down a storm to help create a great atmosphere. Special mention to John Gale, who took many of the pupils out on the buggy as he delivered beer and coke to the 40 teams who played. Also special mention to Steve Brattan who arranged the golf net so the kids were able to have a go at playing, some with great skill. The winning team was Nanette Tuck, Darren Gough, and Dave and Sue Colvin. Second place went to Mark Sutherland, Steve Brattan, Andrew Thompson and John Lock. Third saw Paul Stenton, Rik Hall, Andy Garton and Dave Ingham pip Gill Kapka, Phil Welby, and Alaistair and Alison Fletcher.

We then saw Captain’s Weekend take place. Saturday’s mixed greensomes was won by Trevor Gadd and Sue Pearson on 43 points from Ian Hunter and Gill Kapka. Captain’s Dave Holland and Judith Gorman combined to take third spot.

Sunday saw 144 players competing. A 50 minute rain delay occurred midday, and testament to the course drainage as to how quickly play resumed once the rain stopped. Also a great achievement by the starters who got play bang up to time by the last tee off. 4 players tied on 68, which saw a three way playoff as Boyd Mawer was unfortunately at work. Dan Snowden made three straight pars to win form Dave Smith and then Simon Peart. Dave has just taken delivery of some new i25 irons and is using them to great effect. Best gross was won by Ash Fletcher from PJ Riley.

Well done to Captain Dave and his wife Kate who were fantastic hosts over the weekend.

Also my lad Josh did a great job videoing the playoff of the first tee and might have secured Rob and I a lesson or two when you saw your swings after!!!!!!

Cleethorpes Golf Club Captain's Weekend 5/6th July, 2014

Last weekend, 5/6 July, 2014, Dave Holland, Captain of Cleethorpes Golf Club, enjoyed an extremely busy Captain's Weekend supported by many. The weather was brilliant, apart from a short period of inclement weather on the Sunday but this didn't dampen the spirits of the competitors and some truly great scores were recorded, as follows:--

Saturday, 5 July, 2014
Captain's Mixed Greensomes Stableford Competition

This traditional mixed competition was well supported and enjoyed by many and some incredible pairings dovetailed extremely well to produce some outstanding results!! 1. Sue Pearson and Trevor Gadd 43 stableford points, 2. Gill Kapka and Ian Hunter, 42 points and 3. Lady Captain, Judith Gorman and Men's Captain, Dave Holland, 41 points. The presentation for this competition took place the following evening.

Sunday 6 July, 2014
The Captain's Cup - Medal Competition

A day of two extremes - torrential rain affecting parts of the morning round and warm sunshine for the lucky afternoon competitors but the scoring was equally impressive. So impressive that there had to be a three way play-off for first place between Simon Peart, Dave Smith and Danny Snowden, and on exact handicaps 1. Danny Snowden with a nett 68, on exact handicap and he took it from 2. Dave Smith also nett 68 and 3. Simon Peart, nett 68. Best gross went to Ash Fletcher with a 71 and he was closely followed by P. J. Riley with 71. The 'V's' over 55 years of age went to Steve Courtney, nett 72, 'VV's' over 65's Roger Holt, nett 71 and 'VVV's' over 75's went to Brian Miller, nett 75. Nearest the pin on 11th - Martin Thompson, Longest drive on 16th Danny Houlton. Best front 9 went to Steve Irving and best back 9 went to Mark Appleyard. The Captain, Dave Holland presented the prizes and gave thanks to all concerned, in the Clubhouse afterward. Liz Stones, Chairman, gave a vote of thanks to the Captain for all his hard work and dedication put in to making the day the tremendous success it was.

Captain's AM AM

Because of the busy schedule at Cleethorpes Golf Club, this competition is traditionally played before Captain's weekend and the winners announced on Captain's Day (6.7.14). The course was full for the whole day, with excellent support for this competition from women's, men's and mixed teams. As usual, there was some tremendous teamwork involved in producing the great scores achieved on the day but this year it was the team of mother and son, Nannette and Cameron Tuck together with Ash Fletcher who were on the winner podium with 79 stableford points, a full three points ahead of their nearest rivals, Darren Gough, Tony Miller and John Stables with 76 points and they took it on the back 9, from Mark Godfrey, and another family tie, father and son, Boyd and Zak Mawer also with 76 points. The best mixed/ladies team prize went to Lady Captain, Judith Gorman, Alison Fletcher and Sue Pearson with 67 points.

Football wise the four most fancied teams are in the World Cup semi finals. Alas Brazil are without Neymar after a horrendous tackle, ironically going unpunished!! Not sure who I want to win, but not Holland after Robben’s diving theatrics!!!

Holly and Sophie both finished steadily in The European Ladies tournament at the weekend, both continuing to have great seasons and a big boost to us as a club. McDowell made a return to form to retain his French Open title too.

Shop wise we are now gearing up for the imminent arrival of the new G30 range.
