Some wet weather

The weather, as so often on this isle has dominated the week just gone with over three inches of rain Tuesday into Wednesday seeing the course closed for a day. Testament to the hard work of the green staff and also the drainage work done over the last few years in seeing it back open by Thursday. The Ladies championship was due on Wednesday but will be put into the diary at a later date, whilst Thursday’s midweek was cancelled to give bunker pump out work a chance to be completed.

By Saturday the course was back playing well and The Hospital Cup was played in good conditions. Well done to John Cox for a winning 66, and to PJ who won the gross with a fine 70. A mention too for Wayne Padley who has had a few lessons and is using his new PING G400 clubs to great effect, despite his dodgy hips!

I was away in bath with Lorraine at the weekend, a city Rob knows well having grown up not far away. We had a great short break in a beautiful city and would recommend a visit some time.

Hospital Cup

The Hospital Cup was played for by 126 men at Cleethorpes Golf Club, this is a medal competition and the winner was John Cox with 73 - 7 = 66 which reduces his handicap to 6. In second place James Hibbett with 71 - 4 = 67 and third place went to Dave Campling with 81 -14 = 67.

There were 5 players with nett 67 so the placings were worked out on countback. After all the rain earlier in the week everyone remarked how well the green keepers had managed to present the course for the competition, let's hope we can all enjoy sunshine from now on.

Charity day

Don’t forget to book in for Charity Day on 2nd September, £10 per member and £20 per guest. This is payable with entry in the shop. Also see the Secretary if you intend to play in The Mixed Open or The Seniors Open, both in September.

Sport update

A great first major win in The US PGA for nice guy Justin Thomas, Italian Molinari was joint second showing his undoubted class.

Grimsby came unstuck against a good Coventry side on Saturday, whilst my boys opened with a familiar Baggies 1-0 win, scoring from a set piece and yet again only 29% possession at home. It could be a long season for me. Burnley were the surprise result in winning at Chelsea, whilst Man United’s 400 million team looked the real deal. Early yet, but wins for Spurs, Man City, Everton and Arsenal could indicate a familiar top six at the end of the campaign.

Club fittings

Shop wise we had an amazing 6 fittings last week and have more this week as the PING G400 testing shows no sign of slowing down. Indeed there are just two slots left for the PING fitting day on the 24th August at 3.30pm and 4.00pm so click the link below to book either. Also on the Friday 25th August we have a Titleist fitting day with spots free from 2.30pm. It might be a good idea to attend both if you are looking for new clubs to gain a comparison.

Coaching update

Lesson wise the 3 studio lessons for £50 offer is proving popular. Don’t forget the short game clinic on Tuesday 22nd August for an hour from 6.00pm. Cost is £10 per pupil and this is a great class in a vital area often overlooked coaching wise.

We have our last junior golf day of the summer on Wednesday 30th August from 10 till 3, cost £10 per youngster. This is open to all levels with an accent on fun.

Lastly a mention for the ladies short game class on Tuesdays from 3.00pm for an hour, cost £5 per pupil.
